Mayor Mendenhall is getting results for working families

An empowered and well organized labor force is important not only for our country’s economic health, but for the prosperity of all Utah families. This is a belief Erin holds in her soul and she has made it her mission to stand with and for Utah’s labor movement throughout her political career. As mayor, she has been a steadfast supporter of Salt Lake City’s working families and a strong leader for our city government’s employees.

That's why Erin has been endorsed by Salt Lake's working families, including SLC Firefighters IAFF Local 81, Salt Lake Police Association, Professional Firefighters of Utah, Utah AFL-CIO, Central Utah Federation of Labor, AFSCME Local 1004, Operating Engineers Local 3, Laborers Local 295, Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers - Utah, and the American Federation of Teachers - Utah.

ENSURING FAIR COMPENSATION FOR CITY WORKERS

  • Mayor Mendenhall gave police unprecedented wage increases and has advocated for salary increases to maintain top-or-near-top pay for police and fire among our main competitors.
  • Even though Local 81 signed a three-year wage deal in 2021, the city is increasing wages this year to ensure we are paying top-of-market among our main competitors.
  • Many AFSCME positions saw substantial market increases over the past two years.
  • The Mendenhall Administration commissioned a compensation study of non-union city workers’ wages to ensure market competitiveness and gender equity.
  • Erin adjusted the take-home car ordinance to allow people who live further away take home city cars. This impacts police, fire, and some AFSCME positions.
  • The city is updating our policy and increasing the allowance for city employees who prefer to use their personal cell phone device rather than carry a city-owned phone.

HELPING UNION SHOPS WIN MORE CITY CONTRACTS

  • The Mendenhall Administration have increased the score-weighting for local labor and local business to “put a thumb on the scale” when scoring comes between two capable vendors. This can be modified and should be tailored to each procurement item if appropriate.
  • Erin’s chief procurement officer has started an internal policy encouraging staff to seek quotes from local businesses first.
  • The city are also implementing a policy that requires consideration of whether the bidder has an apprenticeship program in awarding RFPs.
